“I can’t even think about taking my intellectually disabled son to the hospital. I don’t feel comfortable taking him to the hospital because he screams and scares others and it feels like the hospital doesn’t like it.”
Lee Jung-ja (false name, 51 years old)

It is not easy for people with intellectual or autistic disabilities to go to the hospital even though they show some signs of health issues because they feel very nervous at an unfamiliar place and have difficulty describing their symptoms.

HUMAN IN LOVE provided medical support for the handicapped who have difficulty going to the hospital on June 25th 2017, at ‘Cherry Garden’ (HIL Busan branch) which is running a daycare center and group home for those with developmental disabilities.

Medical support was provided by around 50 people including the medical team from ‘Korean Open Doctors Society’, volunteers and social workers. About 26 people from Cherry Garden were provided with medical and dental supplies for free.

Social workers and Cherry Garden members who have disabilities played music and performed Nanta to thank medical teams and volunteers for visiting the center. Thanks to the nice surprise, medical support activities began in a nice, friendly mood.

Medical and dental booths and pharmacy booths were installed at a place where the disabled felt familiar with. In the medical booth, family members or social workers communicated with the doctor on behalf of the handicapped to describe their symptoms in detail. And based on their description, the doctors could examine the condition and asked further questions.

All of the participants were united to make sure everyone could get quality medical services. And people applauded as soon as the last patient’s examination was over.

People with intellectual disabilities have a hard time going to the hospital and getting treatment. It was so moving to see medical teams and volunteers carrying medical devices to treat patients. Most of all, the best part of their visit is that those who got dental treatment can now smile even better. We really appreciate HIL medical teams and volunteers.

We sincerely appreciate all of those who have joined their hands to provide medical support for the handicapped as well as all of our HIL members who make this possible.
