UNEP was established in 1973 under the United Nations (UN) in order to promote international collaboration, coordination and environment protection activities. As an intergovernmental organization dedicated to environmental issues, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has made efforts to adopt and promote awareness of environmental issues such as climate change, loss of nature and biodiversity, pollution and waste, and to resolve fundamental issues with governments, businesses, schools, research institutions and NGOs.

UNEP has accredited NGOs who comply with various requirements defined by the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA), which is the world’s highest decision-making body on environmental issues while conducting global and professional activities for environment for over two years in order to support accredited organizations around the world in addressing environmental issues in an effective, comprehensive and balanced way.

HIL collected marine and beach waste at Tsushima Island, Japan, and then in East, South and West Sea in Korea. Since 2022, HIL has been serving as a coordinator in South Chungcheong Province for “a project to take care of beaches” led by the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries and Korea Marine Environment Management Corporation.

We have also held “the ocean that I love_ children’s drawing contest” every year as part of a campaign with children and installed an exhibition booth with award-wining drawings, made an exhibition both online and offline, produced and distributed children’s books in order to promote the importance of environmental conservation.

As an accredited NGO, HIL can express its opinions on global environmental issues both in written and verbal formats, attend UNEA’s general meetings and observe ministerial meetings while working on more various activities for environmental protection through collaboration, cooperation and solidarity with governments, businesses, schools and NGOs.
Meanwhile, HIL has established its presence as an international relief and development NGO by obtaining a special consultative status of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC), being designated as an official partner with the United Nations Department of Public Information (UN DPI) and as an accredited NGO by UNEP. We will continue to actively conduct projects for environment, education, the vulnerable and those who are suffering from natural disasters. Thank you.
