With IsraAID, a humanitarian organization specializing in psychotherapy, and GLOBAL CARE, an international humanitarian medical NGO, HUMAN IN LOVE starts a “PTSD Counselor Training Program” at Erum Center in Yeouido for two weeks from March 28 (Monday).

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychological disorder that results from repeated experiences after a person experiences a terrifying event like a disaster, crime, torture or assault. Those with PTSD have difficulty living a normal life. In Korea, people are increasingly interested in PTSD as the number of people suffering from the disorder has increased after several shocking accidents—the sinking of the Sewol ferry and the Daegu subway fire.

From years of rescue and relief experiences in dealing with large-scale disasters like the earthquake in Nepal, the sinking of the Sewol ferry in Korea and the typhoon in Philippines, HUMAN IN LOVE has realized the importance of helping humanitarian activists, welfare organizations and on-site NGO workers develop and enhance their PTSD counseling skills.

From July 2014 with IsraAID that specializes in psychotherapy and counselor training, HUMAN IN LOVE has discussed how to nurture PTSD counselors in Korea, and that’s how the First PTSD Counselor Training Program began in August last year.

The lectures of the second training program were given by Dr. Batia Sheffy, a member of IsraAID/ Ph.D in social welfare/ expert in health, rehabilitation and trauma, and Professor Avia Furlager, a mental health therapist/ dance movement therapist/ psychotherapist taking care refugees.

The PTSD Counselor Program is joined by people from various people like experts in humanitarian aid, on-site NGO workers, psychotherapists, nurses and those majoring in psychology. In addition to theory classes, the participants perform activities such as dancing and painting and express and cope with their own trauma.

We hope that this program can help people from home and abroad better deal with PTSD as well as help nurture experts in psychotherapy.
