“Let’s mend our friend’s house.”

Greetings to HUMAN IN LOVE family! I’m Seong, Hae-shin who is working in Burundi and Rwanda.
Recently, Burundi and Rwanda have gone through some troublesome events. At Kigali, Rwanda’s capital city which is known to be relatively safe, an Islamic State-related man was shot to death, startling the residents. HUMAN IN LOVE scholarship students and staff are particularly paying attention to our safety these days.

However, despite the situation, HUMAN IN LOVE projects have been making steady progress. I would like to introduce our house-repairing activity which took place in Dec. 2015.

HUMAN IN LOVE repaired the house of two HUMAN IN LOVE scholarship students (KALISA Henerco and NTAKIRUTIMANA Damascene) from Dec. 21 to 23, 2015. The houses of the two students were located in a remote area where even the border of Burundi can be seen from the main street. Their houses are two-hour walk even from Rweru Sector, so it was tough for the other scholarship students to reach them for the volunteer work. However, it was impressive to see our scholarship students waking up early in the morning and walking the long way to reach the two houses.

Most of the houses in Rweru Sector are made of dried mud bricks, so it is not uneasy to see houses coming down as time passes. Moreover, residents are invulnerable to various diseases since their houses do not have doors, let alone windows. In this situation, simply applying cement on mud walls and installing windows and doors can change the quality of life of the residents.

In fact, the house-repairing volunteer work is the favorite activity of HUMAN IN LOVE scholarship students. Everybody is studying in a tough situation, so they are very worried about their families while they stay at the boarding school during school semester. Repairing houses means that their families can be in a clean and safe house while they are gone, so they often smile and say that they hope their turn comes soon. Therefore, they are eager to help repairing other students’ houses as if fixing their own ones.

The house-repairing volunteer project will be carried out again in Nov. 2016 when students can enjoy a long holiday. Until then, please send our scholarship students support and interest so that they can make progress in their study and always be healthy.
