29% of Children in Rwanda Are Engaged in Child Labor
Facing a harsh reality of poverty and hunger, most parents want their children to help their work in fields rather than going to school. HUMAN IN LOVE has been working on various projects to raise children’s participation in education at Rweru Sector where residents are mostly living in poverty. One of these projects is “HUMAN IN LOVE Adult Literacy Class”.

This year, HUMAN IN LOVE Adult Literacy Class was sponsored by not only HIL members but also Happy Bean donators and Happy Bean Matching Double Donation. Thanks for your interest and participation!!

Why Adults, Not Children?
Parents’ awareness on education does affect their children’s educational participation. During the Rwandan genocide in 1994, Rweru residents fled to neighboring Tanzania and Burundi. Since they spent a long time as refugees, they didn’t have a chance to get education or realize the importance of child education even after coming back to their hometown. However, they come to think about education differently after seeing Adult Literacy Class students can read and do the math, open a bank account, check their balance and get properly paid.

It’s important to send children to school!”

If we don’t learn, we can’t be free from poverty!”

Timing is important in learning!”

Special Training for Teachers Who Teach Adult Students
HUMAN IN LOVE Adult Literacy Class is open for 210 residents in 14 villages including two island towns for nine months from May 2018 to January 2019. In last April, 14 teachers from Rwandan villages including island towns took special training sessions for five days. They learned how to teach and make classroom cards based on training materials provided by the government.

Can’t Take Class If You Miss Class Four Times
After a demonstration class, each government officer was assigned to 15 students. Since too many residents wanted to take class, we had to select students based on how passionate they were about taking a lecture. But if they miss a class four times, they will be deprived of an opportunity to take the class and the next person on the waiting list will get that chance.

Kinyarwanda is the Rwandan language, but Rwandan people use alphabets to write letters. HUMAN IN LOVE Adult Literacy Class teaches how to use alphabets in Kinyarwanda and how to utilize numbers. Currently, students are learning how N, M, which are the root words of Kinyarwanda, can be utilized and how to count and calculate money in daily lives. Now the students of HUMAN IN LOVE Adult Literacy Class are helping their children do homework and check what they learned at school. Please keep supporting these parents who study hard to be a better person and better parent. Thank you.
