On February 15, HUMAN IN LOVE Emergency Rescue Team began search and rescue activities in Antakya, Hatay Province, one of the most-severely-affected areas of the recent Turkiye earthquake!
We got assigned with Zone X at a meeting of the USAR Coordination Cell (UCC). Antakya is famous for its delicious food, and Zone X used to be crowded with tourists who visit restaurants, hotels, and stores.
However, most of the buildings had collapsed after the earthquake, as if they had been bombed, and the bustling neighborhood was nowhere to be seen. A local we met near a collapsed hotel told us that students had come to travel and were victimized by this tragic accident.
According to a statement released by Turkish Red Crescent on Thursday, 35,418 people lost their lives in the quake, 105,505 were injured, and 158,165 were displaced.
While local experts estimate that up to 200,000 people are buried under the rubble of buildings that collapsed in the quake, there have been some good news, including the rescue of 74-year-old Kekeç at Dulkadiroğlu, Kahramanmaraş in 227 hours after the quake.
”“If you’re alive, hang on a little longer…”
Please send us a little sign so that we can reach out to those who are holding on to hope
