On October 24, 2020, HUMAN IN LOVE(HIL) Search and Rescue corps and volunteers conducted an underwater clean-up and a beach clean-up in the Jumunjin Port, Gangneung, Gangwon-do province.

The Jumunjin Port is one of the representative ports in the East Sea, and many fishing boats, fishermen, and tourists visit the port. It was a quite crowded on this day because large barges were anchored in the port.
We installed an air tent, a symbol of the HIL’s underwater clean-up, to support putting on swimming suits of divers and store diving equipment near the activity area, and built a canopy to welcome volunteers.

Divers of the HIL Search and Rescue corps secured a safe area for the activities and picked up underwater marine waste with volunteers. In the water, we collected a lot of shock-absorbing tires and traps that fell from fishing boats, iron pipes, ropes, and various plastics.

On the beach, we collected plants washed away by a typhoon, various beverage containers and plastic packaging, lighters, and packs of cigarettes, butane gas, shoes, ropes, etc. On this day, we collected about 1,900 kg of marine debris on the beach and in the sea.

Meanwhile, installing traps, fishing, and camping inside the port is illegal in South Korea. However, many people have been fishing and camping, and the illegal dumping of marine waste continues.

Especially, in November and December of every year, numerous traps are illegally thrown inside the Jumunjin Port to catch sandfishes that come to the shallow water to lay eggs. Even though we collected only the lost traps among them, it was too many.

Please remember! Traps, fishing, and camping inside the port are illegal! And, it’s allowed to use only one trap per person in the permitted area.

This activity was sponsored by KB star bank (KB Green Wave Campaign) and the netizens of Happybean. Also, we would like to thank all the HIL family members for donating to HIL’s activities.
