Restroom, which is essential to our daily lives
What if we don’t have restrooms in our daily lives? There will be feces everywhere, it will stink and we will see a lot of insects and contaminated water… Likewise, restrooms are essential to our safety and human dignity.
First of all, restrooms protect us from bad hygiene and illness. Poor neighborhoods without proper restrooms have to drink contaminated water, which leads to waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera and typhoid. These neighborhoods also lack proper medical systems, so once people get these diseases, they often die. Especially, kids are vulnerable to these diseases.

After using a neighbor’s restroom…
Basically, one family needs one or more restrooms. However, Bugesera, Rwanda where HUMAN IN LOVE has been working, has not many households who can afford proper restrooms. This is why many of them have to use their neighbors’ restrooms with uncomfortable feelings。Howeer, even neighbors’ restrooms often don’t have a proper wall or door, so they often are startled bumping into each other and feel scared after seeing someone is using their restrooms without permission.

For your information, a restroom in the suburban area in Rwanda is different from a typical restroom that you think of. Since there is no running water, you have to dig a hole and put feces inside. Since Gitovu village has particularly hard ground, it is difficult and expnesive to dig a hole to build a restroom. This is why many households don’t have their own restrooms.
HUMAN IN LOVE checked the situation of households who were recommended by the regional government as recipients, and started construction. We made a 6-meter restroom so that they can use it as spaciously as possible.

I felt uncomfortable using my neighbor’s restroom or I had to get it done in a bush, but I think my life will be changed thanks to my own restroom.

Thanks to the government’s strong measures against the covid-19 pandemic, things are quite stabilized in Rwanda. However, many people are still exposed to the risk of getting a disease due to dirty restrooms and water under a poor medical system.
We would like to ask for your continuous attention to make sure more families can live in a cleaner environment in Rwanda, and we also would like to express our gratitude to HIL supporters for helping us to build restrooms.
